Signing in is about to get more convenient with the upcoming releases of Android 15 and Wear OS 5. As spotted by 9to5Google during the Google I/O keynote, these new updates will introduce single-tap passkeys, making the login process simpler and more secure.
In the “Passkeys and Identity Best Practices” session, Google revealed that Android 15 will feature a single-tap sign-in process, merging the account selection and biometric prompt screens into one. This means users can log in using their face, fingerprint, or any other screen unlocking method in just one step.
For developers, this feature will be automatically supported in new versions of Credential Manager on Android 15 or higher. Additionally, Autofill will display Credential Manager results in Gboard, including passwords, passkeys, and Sign in with Google options.
Wear OS 5 will also receive passkey support, allowing users to sign in directly from their smartwatch. The update includes a new “Restore” passkey feature, enabling seamless login to apps when switching to a new device by saving and transferring a restore key through Credential Manager.
These updates will enhance the user experience, making it easier and faster to access accounts on Android and Wear OS devices. The introduction of passkeys on Wear OS also brings it on par with similar features already available on the Apple Watch.
